By his keeping quiet, Sathya Sai Baba condones the presentation by many Sai writers of himself as the Medhi Moud ('the expected one'). The main part of these presentations (those more than 300 points describing how the Mehdi Moud will be identified which fit SSB) have no documentary basis that can be discovered by the most assiduous researches. The main thrust of the writings on this matter seems to be to explain why Muslims do not go to visit SSB (not more than a handful out of the 1.3 billion alive today). The explanation is nothing but a massive malignment against people of Muslim faith as being too sinful!

Another example of how Sathya Sai Baba generally intimidates students and devotees by unconfirmable scares? Here, for the record, is the "End of the World" scenario... the full 38 widely-circulated predictions allegedly told by SSB to 18 students in the late 70s or early 80s, with comments on how they were spread and the follow-up etc. This is typical of much material on the Sai grapevine.

INCREDIBLE STORIES OF SAI BABA AND ANCIENT CAVES IN THE HIMALAYAS Unconfirmable stories are spread in the shape of rumours to prove that SSB is the most fabulous person ever to have lived. Here is noted again how Sathya Sai Baba makes predictions in private interview situations, knowing that they will spread like wildfire as uncontrollable rumours. Then, when the predictions fail, which they invariably do, there is no documentary proof that he made them, and devotees dare not confront him or what he says in any way. The same with many of the leelas and miracles, they are very important to the SSB legend and are mixed up with disinformation, a clever technique at which SSB is adept and he uses his unwitting collaborators to propagate.

SSB claims to be the "master of maya"(delusion). Another fitting word could be "master of disinformation", which technique is effective not least because many people already believe what they are determined to believe and lock out any evidence that causes second thoughts.
Here are more typical 'Sai stories' - persistent accounts of SSB as handling cash, and also pretending to materialise both money and gold... he who claims he has no money etc. These illustrate the technique of building a movement through nurturing a mythology alongside much active & effective disinformation.
