Drought: Government seeks Rs 2,373-cr aid from Centre

HYDERABAD: The State Government on Thursday pleaded for sanction of assistance of Rs 2,373.44 crore as against Rs 1,860 crore sought earlier - Rs 513.44 crore more - to combat the acute drought conditions prevailing in the State.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu indicated the revised figure during the course of his meeting with the Central drought assessment team headed by PK Agarwal, joint secretary in the Union Ministry of Agriculture, before it left for New Delhi.

The team arrived in the State on on Wednesday and after visiting Nalgonda and Medak districts met the Chief Minister at his residence this afternoon.

Naidu gave the following break up for Rs 2,373.44 crore: Rs 420.10 crore (agriculture), Rs 96.63 crore (animal husbandry), Rs 17.26 crore (fisheries), Rs 400.16 crro (rural water supply), Rs 114.78 crore (urban water supply), Rs 122.5 crore (Hyderabad Metro Water Board), Rs 52.91 crore (special nutrition), Rs 500 crore (wage employment), Rs 649.10 crore (APTransco). Naidu also sought the release of 20 lakh metric tonnes of rice for use under the Food-for-Work programme.

Naidu urged the Central team to understand the gravity of the situation and help the State accordingly. He pointed out that reservoirs and borewells had dried up forcing the Government to transport water. As fodder scarcity was acute, the Centre had to help the State with sufficient funds, he said.

Chief Secretary Sathi Nair and Relief Commissioner D C Rosaiah were among those present on behalf of the State Government.

MEMORANDUM: Meanwhile, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) urged the Central drought assessment team to recommend immediate release of assistance of Rs 2,200 crore and 25 lakh metric tonnes of rice sought by the State Government to meet the drought situation.

State Congress leaders, led by CLP leader Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, submitted a memorandum to the members of the team to this effect here on Thursday. They expressed concern over the delay in release of the assistance though the drought was declared in August, 2002.
